Goal Setting From The Heart

Does the thought of GOAL SETTING exhaust you? Does the idea of manifesting your goals inspire you? In the book “Power Vs Force” author Dr. David R. Hawkins says that the world conventionally assumes a sequential process in problem solving. We start from the question, problem, or condition (the known), and then move on to the answer or solution (unknown) in a time sequence that follows definite steps in a logical progression.

Just recently, I received some goal setting information from a well-respected expert. He stated set a goal, select a date by which you intend to manifest the goal, create a plan, and follow it step by step no matter what. I felt no resonance or alignment with that information. Actually, just the thought of that linear approach exhausted me.

You may have noticed that when information is true for you, you will recognize it as ‘your truth’ because it resonates; it stands out, it lights you up, and it inspires you. The expert’s information on goal setting just didn’t ring true for me. Perhaps, if you had read his article, you may have lit up, in which case, this would have been ‘your truth.’

I thought that perhaps I was just being judgmental. Maybe there is some truth in what he wrote. So, rather than immediately invalidating his information, I took inventory of my life and the goals I had achieved, and the goals I had not achieved.

My internal inquiry elicited a profound realization. I recalled only one goal in my life where I put a date on it, created a plan, and followed it precisely to my outcome. Yet, I had attempted this approach numerous times in my life, only to fail. All of my other achievements I approached differently. I set the goal and allowed the timeline of perfection, rather than one imposed by my mind. I didn’t follow the conventional path of achieving a goal or solving a problem, as Hawkins says is the traditional method

Instead, my approach went something like this: I would begin by writing the goal out as specifically as I could, and add, “This or something better, manifests for me at the perfect time, in the perfect place, and in the perfect way.” I would visualize it as advised in the movie ‘The Secret’.

I want to be completely honest. There have been desires that I visualized that didn’t manifest. In hindsight, I can see that they manifested if:

1) I didn’t change my mind along the way.
2) I followed my instincts, the guidance of the Whisper.
3) I didn’t believe my negative self talk.
4) I didn’t attach to ‘when’ or ‘how’.

You’ll find a good example of this in the following story.

True Story

When I started my coaching work in the late 80′s, I graduated from my training on a Sunday evening, and went home to reflect on all I had learned. I felt an immense joy and bubbly energy inside. I was ready to do what I came to earth to do. I was incredibly eager to set up shop and get started! But, I had a problem. I had no money, no credit or resources to get an office. A Whisper, in the form of a thought, rose up inside me and said, “You don’t need money. All you need to do is believe that it will happen.” So, I got out pen and paper and wrote the following: “I now manifest the perfect office, in the perfect location, at the perfect time, with perfect working conditions. Thank you, Creator.”

No sooner had I wrote ‘thank you Creator’ the telephone rang. A woman who had heard I was giving away free sessions to market my services was calling to take one of my free time slots. Two days later, she arrived at my apartment and we conducted her session from my kitchen table. At the conclusion of the session, she asked me if I was going to have an office or work out of my apartment. I confidently stated, “No, I’m going to have an office!” I had learned not to add on the ‘buts’ like, “BUT, I don’t have the money or credit.” I knew that doing so would cancel my intention of having an office. So, I simply stated my truth without any limitations. She looked at me with her gorgeous blue eyes and said, “I have spent seven years in therapy trying to get to the root of my problem and you were able to do it in just one hour!

She went on to inform me that she was a nutritionist and that she shared an office with an M.D. and two acupuncturists. She said, “We currently have an empty office because our psychologist just vacated last Friday. Would you be interested in trading sessions for rent until you can get your business established? Would you like to see the office? It’s only two exits down the freeway from here.”

As you might imagine, I accepted the offer!
I did NOT need credit OR money to get an office! It seemed the Universe had a plan, and the plan unfolded better than I could have imagined.

When your goals or desires align with the higher plan for your life, a mind-made plan may not be necessary. Sometimes, it just gets in the way. Our mind loves a linear plan; it gives us the illusion of being in control. I’m not saying to NOT have a plan. Sometimes it is the thing to do. It gets you started and points you in a direction. However, the challenge comes when we become emotionally attached to our plan, and inflexible

When you follow the goals of the heart, a plan (invisible to the ego) will reveal itself. It reveals itself through the six distinct ways of the Whisper. By learning to recognize, trust, and follow the Whisper you will walk straight into your goal, or it will march right into your life. If you are new to this kind of goal setting start with something small and insignificant to you as in the following story.

It was a cool August morning in Texas. The air was so crisp that I decided to take full advantage of the unusual phenomenon by sitting in the outdoor patio of my local coffee shop one weekday morning. If you have ever been to Texas in August you will know that cool, crisp mornings are, in deed, a rare phenomenon.

This particular coffee shop has a very inviting patio with luscious landscaping, round tables with umbrellas, inviting wicker chairs, soft music wafting out of the trees, and is completed by an exquisite, in-laid brick patio. Simply heavenly!

I felt a strong urge to go out for coffee even before I woke up that morning. In fact, it was the urge that beckoned me from the dream world back into this physical reality. Upon awakening, I felt a magnetic pull drawing me to the coffee shop.

After the barista made my perfect cup of coffee, I found the ideal little table outdoors, pulled up a seat and took my book out of my bag. I opened it, sipped my cup of Joe as the soft, cool breeze gently refreshed me. Just a few pages into the book, I glanced up just in time to make eye contact with a man as he walked passed. A few minutes later on his way back to his vehicle he stopped, and struck up a conversation with me and introduced himself as Jeff. Jeff was in the power washing business. He asked if I knew anyone in need of some power-washing. He didn’t know it, but I recognized him as an answer to a wondering I had.

Just a few days earlier, I had wondered how I was going to get all of the spider webs down that had collected around the eaves and various places on the outside of my house. A thought popped in that I could have it power-washed. I gave it no more thought than that, but felt relief knowing that there was an easy solution to my spider web problem. I went about my business.

So, when Jeff informed me that he was in the power-washing business, I instantly recognized him as the answer to my problem. We struck a deal and within a couple of hours he dropped by to bid the job. As we walked the property together, Jeff noticed the gigantic wasp nests that had collected along the eave of my balcony. He tried to assure me that he would kill the wasp, but I sensed in him a concern. I told him that I was an expert in handling these babies and assured him that I could take care of it before he returned. He seemed amazed that I knew how to do this manly thing as I gave him a lesson in getting rid of wasps. When he got in the truck to leave, he said, “You’re a cool lady!”

What an exciting morning! Once again, I went about life minding my business, allowing the answers to my ‘wonderings’ to come to me. As I reflected on the day, I realized what a life of privilege I live, as we all do even if we don’t recognize it. We wonder. We go about our business and people appear out-of-the-blue as your answer. (Here’s a little secret. You are also the answer to their wondering. Jeff had a need for business. I had a need for ‘his’ service, and he learned a thing or two about getting rid of wasps!)

These days, I can’t recall when I have gone looking for answers to wonderings. The answers and solutions find ME at the perfect time, in the perfect place, and in the perfect way. I allow and I receive when they appear. But to allow and accept, I first acknowledge them AS the answer or solution to the wondering.

Isn’t this an easier way to set a goal? Think of it as ‘effortless manifestation’. The only effort it takes is to say ‘yes’ to the answer when it appears!

Let’s look at the Six Distinct Ways that the Whisper showed up in the power-washing story.

• First, I had a wondering about how to get the spider webs removed.

• Then, a few days latter I woke up with an immediate urge to go to my coffee shop. I had an urge, a strong spontaneous desire, to sit outside and take in the cool morning air.

• A snapshot occurred when I looked in this man’s eyes. The snapshot was so clear and detailed that even days later, I could describe his face well enough for a sketch artist to render an exact likeness.

• After he left, I felt such a surge of inspiration. I was so in awe and inspired by the magic of how magnificent this all works, that I marveled, and was so inspired, in fact, that I had to capture the event in writing.

• When Jeff sat down to exchange contact info, time collapsed and I had no idea if there was a world around us or not. It was only me and my power-wash angel, as I felt a soft knowing that he was the answer to my wondering.

So from now on when thinking about setting a goal, place your attention directly on your soul and heart, and ask from that place to be shown your heart-felt desires. Then allow what you really desire to spring from there. Your desire shows up just when the idea, or inspiration, or urge shows up to move you effortlessly toward your goal. When you have a heart-felt desire for something, your attention is riveted on it with every cell of your being, and you move toward its completion and manifestation easily and effortlessly.
